Kona Decaf

$38.00

Now you can enjoy the full flavor of Pele Plantations Kona Coffee without consuming the caffeine. We waited a long time to offer Kona Decaf, because it had to be done the right way: in an all-natural process that doesn’t detract from the coffee’s flavor.

Kona Decaf is offered in our signature Pele roast, our favorite choice for Kona coffee. The beans are roasted just long enough to produce a mellow, richer flavor that is not overwhelmed by the smoky tones from the roast. The beans are chestnut brown with a slight shimmer of oils on the surface.

We ship freshly roasted whole beans for optimal flavor and freshness.

Our Natural Decaffeination Process

Our all-natural process involves exposing the coffee beans to compressed carbon dioxide, which has the property of combining selectively with caffeine. Steamed coffee beans are bathed in the compressed carbon dioxide. We then remove the caffeine from the carbon dioxide using a charcoal filter.

The biggest benefit of using the CO2 method for our decaf coffee is that the flavor components remain in the bean throughout the process. The traditional Swiss Water process involves soaking out the flavors using chemicals, and then putting them back in. This is something we just can’t do, considering all the hard work our Kona Coffee farmers have put into developing their flavor profiles. Of course, we also prefer the CO2 method because it involves only natural elements.

Coffee Origin

Coffee Farm in Kona, Hawai‘i

ABOUT THE ESTATE

Our Kona decaf comes from the Ikehu estate in Honaunau, a family farm with a history of producing consistently good coffee for almost 40 years. It occupies a valley at 1700 feet that is steep and rocky with pockets of deep, rich soil. In the late 1970s, its current owners came to the Big Island for adventure and surf. The coffee farm was perfect to support their aspirations. It came with 50-year-old coffee stock terraced on one acre around the house; they terraced and planted a second acre. This beautiful estate produces consistently good coffee year after year.
